Dairy Queen!
Nini LOVES to stroll down to Dairy Queen down the street for a chocolate dipped cone. While were there, it's usually pretty hard to get a word out of she or Chris. Wonder why?!

Matriarch
I wish we would have thought of this sooner...a blog spot for Nini. We've often wanted to share with you all how she is doing, and we're so glad we can now.
In September 2003, Nini was diagnosed with Alzheimer's/Dimentia Type. The doctors said she would need to be in an assisted living facility.
Nini has been at Riverside Convalescent since November 2003. I remember the year, month, day, hour that she arrived very well. I remember it, because it meant such a change for our family. Things would be different now. We all know that change is inevitable though. Nini must know this best of all.
It took many months for Nini and all of us to adjust to her new home. There have been some ups and downs throughout that process, but mostly ups. We are all close by and so we can see her daily. Nora is just across the river that runs behind the hospital. She can throw a rock a few times and reach Nini's window!
We've kept a journal and photos of this time in Grandma's life. From the patio, where we sit under the morning sun, we've sneaked in some tape recordings of Nini talking of life as a little girl, what her Momma' and Daddy were like, what a good kid Bob was and how "wild" Aunt Helen was back in the day! We even have a video of Grandma enjoying her favorite chocolate dipped ice cream!
It's been a blessing beyond all blessings to spend this time together. I cherish it with all I am.
Enjoy your visit(s) as we now share this time with you!
If you have memorable stories, photos, or thoughts about Nini or Grandpa Frank, please feel free to email and we will post them!

Is that Grandma on a Beamer?!
Here you go! This was taken at the house on Redburg Street in Quincy, shortly before Grandma fell ill with Alzheimers. Chris just bought this new toy and he wanted to show it to Granmda. He also wanted to give her a ride on it! While Grandma seemed to be all game, Dad and I had to hold back the reigns on she and Chris!

Giving Some Love
One of the many wonderful nurses at Riverside, giving Grandma some love. I've always said these nurses are overworked and underpaid. The care and love they give is priceless.

Grandpa
This site would not be complete without Grandpa Frank - Kiko. Linda Leonhardt and Dad specially photocopied this rare and unique picture of Grandpa when he was just a young whipper-snapper and newly married to Grandma. I do believe it is the oldest picture we have. We all received a framed copy for Christmas one year. This one now hangs over Grandma's bed at Riverside, draped with a cross.

Nina Rosie and Bill
Nini Rosie and Bill are still making their yearly trip north to see Grandma. They, of course, changed the course a bit this year, and came to Chico.

Aunt Helen's Beautiful Hats!
Last year, I think it was (time flies so quickly!), Aunt Helen knitted Grandma some beautiful hats! Here is Grandma modeling her favorite, the green one, for you! We're in the patio area at Riverside where some get to take smoke breaks sitting under the patio furniture umbrellas. We were sitting out there once and Grandma said, "Do you have a cigarette?" "Grandma!" I said. "You stopped smoking years ago! And, sorry, no cigarettes...I don't guess your doc would take too kindly to that!"

November 2, 2007 - Happy Birthday Nini!
Thank you all for your wonderful cards and phone calls. We read each birthday card to Grandma and she enjoyed them very much! Dad came down for the weekend and Grandma's probably a bit "pleasantly plumper" thanks to all the chocolate and goodies!
For those of you who aren't sure...Grandma was born in 1919, so she is a young 88! When I asked her how it felt to be 88 years young, she said, "I feel like I'm 30!"
